The Settlers II Gold Edition

settlers2

The Settlers II is a classic in my opinion. When this free Gold Edition came out I played it, but a lot of people ended up being unable to track it down on the internet. Even out of those that managed to find a copy on the internet found it difficult, if not impossible to get it to work on their system. If you already know about the game and you enjoyed it you should try and find a copy of “The Settlers II: 10th Anniversary” which is basically a 3D version of the Gold Edition with all the features you loved, Multiplayer, and a small expansion as far as controlling your military and soldiers go. (if you’ve played you know how frustrating that was) In the gallery of this post I have included some pictures from both games.

Continue Reading for the Download and Guide to get the game working.

Here is the DOWNLOAD for those of you who had trouble finding it. Just click “Get it.” on that page.

Now the tricky part is getting it to run. For XP users its easy all you need to do is change the compatibility mode of the s2.exe file included in the download to Windows 95 which is done by right clicking the file and going to the properties. You’ll see it.

For Vista users it is another story. The only way I have been able to run it is using DosBox which is basically an emulator for old computer games that could only run in Dos. You can get that DOWNLOAD here.

After installing Dosbox it can be a little tricky so I will walk you through it to make it simple. First off take the folder you got from downloading Settlers II (After you unzip it) and put it in a folder called Games right on your C drive. Your C drive is found under My Computer and it is where your Program Files folder is at. Name it something short like sett2.  The path to the exe file that runs the game should be something like C:/Games/sett2/s2.exe. Now open DosBox and follow these directions

  • Install
  • Open DosBox from your Desktop (You will see a black command box looking thing)
  • type “mount c c:/Games”
  • type “c:”
  • type “cd sett2″
  • type “s2.exe”

Now remember if you didn’t put the Settlers 2 game folder in the spot I refered to then this wont work, and also if you didnt name it sett2 you will have to use your head to figure out what you need to type. Keep it under 8 characters or DosBox will be a pain about getting in the directory (cd.)  Also, if you have show extentions turned off on your computers explorer windows the fies will not have extentions.  For example “s2.exe” would show as just “s2″

If you have any questions or problems leave a comment and try and explain what happened and where your issue is (the more detailed the easier I will be able to try and help you.)

It should work as long as you downloaded the game from the link I referred and you put the folder at C:/Games/sett2/ Once in this folder there cannot be any folders in it, it must be the game files which include s2.exe

Something to keep in mind, when you download the file you receive ‘Settlers 2, The – Gold Edition.zip’ After unzipping it you will have ‘Settlers 2, The – Gold Edition’ as a folder and inside it you will have a folder called ’s2g’ the s2g folder is the one I renamed to sett2 and moved. So it may be possible you need to fix that or add ‘cd s2g’ between the last 2 steps so you get into the right folder.

To check go to My Computer, Local C Drive, Games, sett2 and see what folder is in there. If any you will need to adjust so that there is not, and the game files are the only things that reside there.

Thanks for this, it works fine for me now in Vista, save for one issue…

I doubt you’re checking here still, but if you are, do you happen to know how to make it run fullscreen?

    Thanks!
